10 Vogue Words in the World for 2021. -Part III Border Crisis-

Author Tommy Aso.

In this blog, I am going to introduce 10 sentences and words that spread out around the world and describe the reason why these words spread out around the world. In this year, the world changes a lot dramatically because of the China virus pandemic, and various vogue words were born due to news and events. In this blog, I am going to introduce "Border Crisis" and explain the reason why "Border Crisis" is nominated as 10 vogue words in the World for 2021. I'd appreciate it if you have other words or sentences that spread out around the world, let me know with comments on SNS and Brogger.

I. Introduction of "Border Crisis"

"Border Crisis" refers to the border between the US and Mexico and the policies that have led to Central American migrants seeking asylum in the United States at the Mexico-United States border. The US Border Patrol which is a federal law enforcement agency is in charge of deterring, detecting, and apprehending any person crossing into the US illegally at any point not designated as a port of entry by the Attorney General of the United States. In addition, the US Border Patrol agents interdict and seize contraband smuggled into the United States through non-ports of entry. They are also in charge of immigration and customs officials.

II. The Reason Why "Border Crisis" is Nominated as 10 Vogue Words in the World for 2021. -The First Half from January to June 2021-

This is the last and the main paragraph. The reason why "Border Crisis" is nominated as "10 Vogue Words in the World for 2021" is that "Border Crisis" occurred itself suddenly before or after Joe Biden is in charge of the 46 US president since he stopped the border wall construction which was planned by Donald Trump who was the 45 US president and decided to open the border. On January 13th, just one week before Biden's inauguration, more than 3000 illegal people left Honduras and El Salvador to migrate to the US. The number of illegal people grew up from 7000 to 8000 people. On January 16th, the Guatemalan government and the Mexican government deployed their militaries to their borders to stop the migrant caravan from transiting through their countries on the way to the United States to no avail.

In February 2021, a group of migrants was found massacred in northern Mexico. A few months later, the US Customs and Border Patrols reported that various colored bracelets with writing on them are used as a method to track a migrant's payment status to their coyote or smuggler and drug cartels that control various parts of Mexico. The bracelets reportedly are used to track the status of protection from cartel actions such as death, kidnapping, and the right to be in a cartel-controlled territory or cross the border into the US.

In March, while the number of immigrants who enter the US from Mexico is rising, Biden told migrants "Do not come over." He said that "the US was arranging a plan for migrants to "apply for asylum in place" without leaving their original locations. In the meantime, Biden said that "migrant adults are sent back" and related to the continuation of the Trump administration's Title 42 policy for quick deportations, but he did not make efforts to follow this and migrants continued to cross into the US. Biden announced that his administration would not deport unaccompanied migrant children before they were sent back to sponsors; however, the rise in arrivals of such children exceeded the capacity of facilities meant to shelter them. The Biden and Harris administration ordered Federal Emergency Management Agency to help manage children, but facilities are overwhelmed because of the numbers of adults and children coming into the US.

On March 24th, Biden tasked Vice President Kamala Harris to reduce the number of unaccompanied minors and adult asylum seekers. She is also in charge of leading the negotiations with Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador.

In June 2021, US Vice president Kamala Harris visited Guatemala and Mexico to address the root causes of migration from Central America to the United States since Donald Trump planned to visit the border on June 23rd at that time. Then, he visited the US-Mexico border on the day. During her visit, Harris issued an appeal to potential migrants and stated that "She wants to be clear to folks in the region who are thinking about making that dangerous trek to the United States and Mexico border: Do not come. Do not come".  After her visit and the press conference with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei ended, she did not do anything about the US-Mexico border at all. The border crisis escalated itself and grew up bigger and bigger from September in 2021 because of an event in August and her act.

III. The Reason Why "Border Crisis" is Nominated as 10 Vogue Words in the World for 2021. -The Second Half from July to December 2021-

The event is a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Haiti on August 14th. The Haitian government described that the 7.2 magnitude earthquake killed 304 people at least and hundreds of people were injured or missing. In addition, 1,800 people were injured in this disaster. Some of them were treated in hospitals in the three most affected communities.

The US Geological Survey reported that the epicenter of the quake was 7.5 miles northeast of Saint-Louis du Sud. That was about 78 miles west of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince.

The USGS claimed that "High casualties are probable and the disaster is likely widespread." "Past events with this alert level required a national or international level response." A tsunami warning was issued immediately after the quake but later lifted.

Residents shared images on social media of the ruins of concrete buildings including a church in which a ceremony was apparently underway in the southwestern town of Les Anglais. Part of the Sacred Heart church in Les Cayes and the home of the bishop there also collapsed.

This is the detail of a 7.2 Magnitude Earthquake in Haiti on August 14th, 2021:

Because of this earthquake, Haitian people who lost their houses began moving to immigrate to the US in August. South China Morning Post broadcasted on September 21st that the US authorities have begun removing migrants from this Texas town bordering Mexico since thousands of Haitian refugees arrived in Del Rio over the past week. Many of them have been camping around a bridge and getting basic goods from the Mexican side. The US officials were allowed Haitian refugees to cross back and forth for a few days, but authorities said that they can not return from Mexico.

Richerson who was one of the Haitian migrants said in an interview on South China Morning Post that Haitian people are having a hard time. Their family sends us money, but they can not eat. They have children, but they do not have diapers. He has to cross to the Mexican side with wet money to be able to buy things for the child and they have nothing. They are unable to eat and need help and everything that's happening to them over there. Because there are a lot of children, and they are only removing the single parents and the children are left alone. The children and pregnant women are the only ones. They are separating the pregnant women on one side, but the children are left on the floor. He has to go and buy food for the children.

Many Haitian migrants fled poverty, gang violence, and natural disasters. When the US steps up security, some attempt more difficult crossings to evade law enforcement. Wildly Jeanmary who is one of the Haitian migrants said in an interview on South China Morning Post that they endured many blows a lot and made a sacrifice to get to the US to support their family. He has a personal mother and is everything to his mother. He had to do everything for her because she can't do anything. He also has his own wife and a two-year-old girl. They have to eat because they are human. Nobody wants to leave their country to go live in another country. They woke up one day and said: "Let's go to the US." They did not reach this point because of that. They got here because they want a better life.

The US flew more than 320 Haitians back to their country on September 19. Stephanie who is one of the Haitian deported migrants said in an interview on South China Morning Post that she left Haiti to find a better future because all young Haitian people can not get any work despite finishing their studies. They are on the street with nothing. That is why there are many youngsters on the street and many of them are criminals. It is because the authorities do not think about them. If jobs could be created, they would never have exposed themselves to this misery in other countries. If they had created factories for them, they don't ask for much. Since when they go to other countries, they do jobs that they don't do here in Haiti.

The US official explained that more than 3,000 Haitian migrants have been removed from Del Rio since September 17th. That includes those who have been deported or moved to detention centers. Alejandro Mayorkas who is secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security described in an official press conference that DHS is securing additional transportations to accelerate the pace and increase the capacity of removal flights to Haiti and other destinations in the western hemisphere. Americans are communicating as they have now for months loudly and clearly that irregular migration and perilous journeys are not the journeys to take. One risk is one's life. The life of one's loved ones for a mission that will not succeed. Many of the 12,000 remaining migrants are expected to be expelled within a week.

It is a fact that illegal drugs are imported to the US from the US-Mexico border.

P.S.: "Border Crisis" causes "Let's Go, Brandon!" which is one of the nominated vogue words. I am going to introduce this nominated vogue word and explain the reason why "Let's Go, Brandon!" is nominated as "10 Vogue Words in the World for 2021" in the next blog. I'd appreciate it if you look forward to it!
